Oklahoma City Thunder Begin Title Defense with Dramatic Double Overtime Win
The Thunder star came to the Thunder back in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the winning baskets late in a second overtime period as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.
Last season's MVP scored a team-high 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just mere seconds left in double OT, securing the titleholders a winning beginning.
Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with a game-high 39 and also connected on a career-high five three-pointers.
But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points of his own, was instrumental together with the game's hero.
"Grit and defence," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, good luck or misfortune. We did enough defensive work to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a good start."
Before the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was raised at their home court, while the squad were awarded their championship rings.
Oklahoma City defeated the Indiana Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their first title since the franchise relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the chance to secure some payback on Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Houston return to action on the same day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was insufficient to prevent his current team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.
Miami's star picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 points for the visiting Warriors.
Los Angeles were missing the league's top scorer James as he recovers from sciatica.
